The Big 12 Conference

The name was changed to the Big 12 Conference when two additional schools, Baylor and TCU, joined in 1996. Six more schools have since joined the conference: Colorado and Nebraska (in 2011), Kansas and Missouri (in 2012), and West Virginia and Texas Tech (in 2013).

The conference is currently made up of ten schools: Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. These ten schools compete in two divisions: the North Division and the South Division. The winner of each divisional race then meets in a conference championship game to determine the overall champion of the Big 12 Conference.

In recent years, the Big 12 Conference has been one of college football’s most competitive and exciting leagues. In 2019, for example, Baylor and Oklahoma met in the conference championship game after both finishing with identical 11-1 records; Oklahoma won that game 30-23.

Men’s Basketball

The Big 12 Conference has been home to some of the nation’s most successful men’s basketball programs.Kansas has won the most regular season titles with 14 followed by Oklahoma with 11. Baylor has won 3 regular season titles while Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State have all won 2 each. In terms of conference tournament titles Kansas leads the way with 5 followed by Baylor with 4.

Texas Tech Athletics

Texas Tech University has a rich history of athletics. The school offers a variety of sports teams that compete at the Division I level. Some of the most popular sports teams include football, basketball, and baseball.

Football

Texas Tech plays its home football games at Jones AT&T Stadium, with a capacity of 60,454. The stadium is located on the university’s campus in Lubbock, Texas. The team has been coached by Matt Wells since 2019. Texas Tech has played its home games in Lubbock since 1947 when Clifford B. and Eva Green GillESPIE purchased the property that would become the site of the stadium. The first game was played on October 3, 1925 against Daniel Baker College (now known as Howard Payne University) with a pre-game celebration that included a Procession of Bands and a bonfire. Tech lost to Daniel Baker by a score of 12-0.

Texas Tech men’s basketball games are broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest, which is available on most cable and satellite providers in Texas.
