NCAA Tournament seeding
In college basketball, the NCAA Tournament is a single-elimination tournament of 68 teams that compete in seven rounds for the national championship. The tournament is widely considered to be the most prestigious event in college basketball and is one of the most popular sporting events in the United States.
The tournament is organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and each year it is held in a different city. The first round of the tournament is known as the “First Four,” and it features four play-in games between teams that did not automatically qualify for the tournament. The winners of those games advance to the main bracket, where they join the 64 teams that were given automatic bids based on their regular-season and conference tournament performances.
The main bracket is divided into four regions, and each region has 16 teams that are seeded from 1 to 16. The top four seeds in each region are given a bye in the first round, and they automatically advance to the second round. In each subsequent round, the winners of each game advance to play another team in their region, until only four teams are left in each region. Those teams face off in the regional semifinals (the “Sweet Sixteen”) and regional finals (the “Elite Eight”), with the winners advancing to the national semifinals (the “Final Four”).
The two teams that reach the national semifinals are seeded 1-2 based on their performances in previous rounds, and they play each other in one national semifinal game. The winners of those games advance to play each other in the national championship game.
