The History of Texas Tech Baseball

Texas Tech University has a long and storied history in baseball. The school has been home to some of the game’s greatest players, coaches, and teams.

Texas Tech baseball began in 1925, when the school fielded its first team. The team was coached by Pete Caveny, who would lead the Red Raiders to their first conference championship in 1929.

Caveny’s teams were successful, but it was not until the arrival of head coach Floyd Gentry in 1947 that Texas Tech truly began to establish itself as a national power. Gentry’s teams won six conference championships and made seven College World Series appearances.

Under Gentry, Texas Tech produced some of the greatest players in program history, including Hall of Fame catcher Stan Musial and future Major League managers Billy Martin and Whitey Herzog.

The Red Raiders would continue to be one of the nation’s top programs under head coach Larry Hays, who took over after Gentry’s retirement in 1976. Hays’ teams won four conference championships and made six College World Series appearances.

Texas Tech has produced dozens of Major League Baseball players, including All-Stars Josh Beckett, Jason Varitek, and Kerry Wood. The school has also been home to numerous coaching legends, such as Gentry, Hays, Eddy Carroll, maestro Fellows Phil Johnson and Mark Johnson.

The Texas Tech Baseball Program

Texas Tech has one of the most successful baseball programs in the country. The Red Raiders have made the NCAA tournament 33 times and have won 15 conference championships. They have also made it to the College World Series 11 times, most recently in 2019.

The Red Raiders play their home games at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, which opened in 1998 and has a capacity of 4,500. The team is currently coached by Tim Tadlock, who has been at Texas Tech since 2013.
